In a move to enhance its technological edge and security, Japan has unveiled a revised national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. The updated policy, sanctioned on July 14, seeks to fortify the country’s domestic AI capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign technology providers. This revision, coming just six months after the initial strategy was launched, underscores the swift evolution of AI technologies and the escalating concerns surrounding cybersecurity.
Central to Japan’s strategy is the pursuit of “AI sovereignty,” a goal to augment the nation’s capacity to independently develop and manage AI technologies. The government has committed to reviewing existing AI-related legislation and systems, alongside bolstering collaboration with international allies to tackle new security challenges. Officials have highlighted the sophistication of current AI models, which have heightened the complexity and accessibility of cyber threats.
Japan’s policy also champions an AI Transformation (AX) initiative aimed at weaving AI into decision-making processes, industry, and workforce development. The strategy emphasizes investment in “vertical AI,” which targets specific sectors like healthcare and manufacturing, as well as “physical AI,” encompassing robotics and autonomous vehicles.
As part of its long-term growth vision, Japan aspires to secure significant investment in these areas. By the fiscal year 2040, the country aims to attract 23.1 trillion yen from both public and private sectors for vertical AI, and 10.5 trillion yen for advancements in physical AI.
