In a move aimed at bolstering its defense capabilities, Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to introduce a new procurement system to incorporate advanced technologies from startups into its defense arsenal. Announced by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, the initiative is designed to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge innovations, particularly in areas such as drones and artificial intelligence, which are pivotal to modern warfare.
The fast-track program will offer startups funding in advance for technology development, encouraging their participation in the defense sector. The ministry’s initial focus will be on low-cost, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment for the Ground and Maritime Self-Defense Forces. Emphasizing domestic production, the initiative aims to select several promising companies at the concept stage and refine candidates through prototype development and testing.
In addition to drones, the ministry is seeking technologies that can improve warehouse management, reduce staffing needs, and enhance working conditions through noise reduction equipment for the Air Self-Defense Force. These efforts reflect a broader strategy to integrate innovative technologies that can strengthen Japan’s defense infrastructure.
Applications for the first round of proposals will open on October 2, marking the start of this ambitious endeavor. The ministry hopes that by streamlining the procurement process and fostering startup involvement, it can significantly enhance the country’s defense readiness with advanced, homegrown technologies.
