In a significant diplomatic engagement, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Tokyo, signaling a renewed commitment to bolstering bilateral ties. This meeting comes amid a notable shift in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy under its new leadership. The leaders committed to deepening development cooperation, including a provision of 3 billion yen (approximately $18.3 million) in yen loans. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of fostering greater people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Takaichi articulated Japan’s intention to cultivate a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, grounded in mutual values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Prime Minister Wale expressed appreciation for Japan’s backing, underscoring the critical need for support as Pacific island nations navigate various economic and developmental hurdles.
This diplomatic meeting follows a notable policy transformation in the Solomon Islands. In 2019, the nation shifted its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China, and in 2022, it inked a security agreement with Beijing. This agreement, which permits Chinese naval and security presence in the country, has stirred apprehension among regional allies regarding China’s expanding influence in the Pacific.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a pivot in foreign policy. He has vowed to reassess the security agreement with China, voiced criticism of China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific, and placed emphasis on strengthening ties with traditional partners by prioritizing visits to Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
For Japan, enhancing relations with the Solomon Islands is integral to its broader strategic vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which seeks to promote regional stability, security, and collaboration. As a token of goodwill, Prime Minister Takaichi presented Prime Minister Wale with a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, a gesture reflecting the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and Takaichi’s connections to Nara Prefecture.
