Mark Rydell, the celebrated director renowned for the film “On Golden Pond,” has passed away at the age of 97. He died of natural causes at a retirement community dedicated to entertainment professionals in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.
Rydell’s most notable achievement came with the 1981 film “On Golden Pond,” which he directed, featuring a stellar cast including Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film was a critical and commercial triumph, earning 10 Oscar nominations, with Henry Fonda and Hepburn winning for their performances. Although Rydell was nominated for Best Director, the award went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.” The film also marked Henry Fonda’s final acting role and the only Oscar win of his illustrious career, grossing over $119 million globally.
Throughout his extensive career, Rydell collaborated with some of Hollywood’s most iconic figures. His directing credits include working with stars such as Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson. Rydell’s other significant works include films like “The Fox,” “The Reivers,” “Cinderella Liberty,” “The Rose,” “The River,” and “For the Boys.”
Before establishing himself as a director, Rydell began his career as an actor, eventually transitioning to directing television and films. His contributions to television include directing episodes of several well-known series. Beyond his directorial pursuits, Rydell dedicated time to nurturing future talent as a teacher and mentor at The Actors Studio West and UCLA.
Rydell leaves behind a legacy marked by artistic achievement and mentorship. He is survived by his daughter Amy, and sons Christopher and Alexander, along with the rest of his family.
