Vietnam and Japan have pledged to enhance their defense collaboration in several strategic domains, such as military training, cybersecurity, and the development of the defense industry. The two nations will also cooperate on United Nations peacekeeping operations and post-war recovery efforts. This agreement came during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces, where they discussed ways to strengthen and implement existing defense cooperation agreements.
General Phan Văn Giang underscored Vietnam’s dedication to refining consultation and dialogue mechanisms, broadening cooperation across military branches, and fostering partnerships in defense technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. He pointed out that the defense relationship has become a crucial pillar in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Japan. The Vietnamese minister also praised Japan’s support in areas such as personnel training, defense industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery initiatives. Furthermore, he advocated for increased scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defense personnel, especially in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.
Japan remains a crucial economic and strategic partner for Vietnam, with robust cooperation in trade, investment, development assistance, and labor exchanges. The defense collaboration between the two countries has significantly expanded, bolstered by regular policy dialogues and military consultations. General Uchikura Hiroaki reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening defense ties with Vietnam and expressed support for heightened cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces.
Both countries agreed to maintain close coordination to further enhance mutual trust, ensure regional stability, and promote long-term strategic cooperation. The meeting highlighted the importance of expanding defense collaboration as a means to bolster the overall strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan.
